Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib desert in southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz. It developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for workers from the harsh environment of the Namib Desert. Driven by the enormous wealth of the first diamond miners the village was built like a German town, with facilities like a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theater and sport-hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray-station[3] in the southern hemisphere as well as the first tram in Africa. It had a railway link to Lüderitz. The town declined after World War I as diamond prices crashed, and operations moved to Oranjemund. It was abandoned in 1956.

potholes of sound and random strings i've found

a random grab bag of songs that are new or new to me, a fair bit of canadian stuff, for you listening pleasure

Jason Molina and Will Johnson have collaborated and have an album coming out. Judging by the track below its going to be on constant rotation for me. Spiral Stairs makes me want to go see the Pavement reunion and remember a great show they did with BSS at sled island. Forest City Lovers have a new 7' and continue to refine their sound. Mountain Man reminds me Alela Diane, not as haunting, but a similar style to her first amazing album The Pirates Gospel. Woods played three new tracks on Daytrotter, these are my two favs, been loving these guys for years. Golden Isles are a Canadian band that is new to me, at first they reminded me of tons of the NME style British crap but on further listens I think they come at their music without the aspirations of a magazine cover. Videotape, often compared to Women which i find a stretch, are also new to me but judging by the tracks I found they are keepers. I generally hate 'remixes', they are music for people who go to clubs to try and get their photos taken by scene photographers for facebook glory. I fucking love the Soft Pact (formerly the Muslims) and I like how much they have changed the song in their remix. Finally, I had heard a little buzz about Valleys before Pop Montreal who's show I unfortunately didnt make it too, but I really with I could have. They remind me of Citizens Here and Abroad but, from the sounds of it, less hit and miss. Ok thats my review? Synopsis?
  1. Molina & Johnson - Twenty Cycles To The Ground*
  2. Spiral Stairs - A Mighty Mighty Fall
  3. Forest City Lovers - Phodilus and Tyto
  4. Forest City Lovers - If I Were A Tree
  5. Mountain Man - Sewee Sewee
  6. Woods - Death Rattle*
  7. Woods - Suffering Season
  8. Golden Isles - Going Out Tonight
  9. Videotape - Nightlights*
  10. Videotape - He The Moon
  11. Phoenix - Fences (Soft Pact Remix)
  12. Valleys - Killer Legs*
  13. Valleys - Silent Woods
*Asterisk donates my picks

on the threshold between the 2nd and 3rd dimensions...

SCINTILLATION from Xavier Chassaing on Vimeo.

An experimental film made up of over 35,000 photographs. It combines an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques. I think it pairs well with the background music. Now turn off your lights and watch it in the dark over and over again....

Beneath, Ink and Resin works (sculptures? paintings? installations?) that make me question what dimension to 'view' these works from. Wikipedia tells me Dustin Yellin's (http://www.dustinyellin.com/) artworks are based on a unique process of painting 3d forms in resin. Common subjects in his artworks are biological imagery. While historic artis
ts like Leopold Blaschka and Ernst Haeckel have used their techniques to represent real biological forms, Dustin Yellin's artworks exist as permutations of natural life and form. His paintings use a method to represent 3d forms that is reminiscent of both lenticular images and rapid prototyping. The technique approximates a static volumetric display and is autostereoscopic as his artworks appear three dimensional without the use of special glasses or viewing equipment.

avian evil eye

Boredom has got the best of me (there is only so much online scrabble you can play, books you can read, guitar you can play, and lloyd roberston on ctv new net you can take in one afternoon)... I figured I would make a post with some lesser known Canadian stuff that I've been listening to... Well, I guess Land of Talk is sort of well know but i doubt many people have heard their new EP so i'll post that for the time being along with some tracks by Zeroes (which included member[s] of land of talk if i remember correctly) and Pick A Piper (which includes a guy from Caribou)... Land of Talk seems to bringing some of their 'edge' back on the ep 'fun and laugther', which i hope leads to a return of the energy that applause cheer boo hiss had. Zeroes kind of does the synth-rock thing but adds a angular element that is at times spastic but in no means overdone; i also hear their live shows are great and recommend people going to see them if they want to get their dance on. Pick A Piper reminds me of a more percussion based Caribou, the tracks are hit and miss for me but overall enjoyable.

  1. Land of Talk - Sixteen Asterisk
  2. Land of Talk - May You Never*
  3. Land of Talk - As Me
  4. Land of Talk - A Series of Small Flames
  5. Zeroes - The Disappearance of The Skyscraper*
  6. Zeroes - Arena
  7. Zeroes - PVC
  8. Zeroes - Mudslinger
  9. Pick A Piper - Yellowknife*
  10. Pick A Piper - Rooms
  11. Pick A Piper - Bechtel Park
asterisk denotes the best track off each ep imo

History of the Night

Throughout the course of th generations
men constructed the night.
At first she was blindness;
thorns raking bare feet,
fear of wolves.
We shall never know who forged the word
for the interval of shadow
dividing the two twilights;
we shall never know in what age it came to mean
the starry hours.
Others created the myth.
They made her the mother of the unruffled Fates
that spin our destiny,
thev sacrificed black ewes to her, and the cock
who crows his own death.
The Chaldeans assigned to her twelve houses;
to Zeno, infinite words.
She took shape from Latin hexameters
and the terror of Pascal.
Luis de Leon saw in her the homeland
of his stricken soul.
Now we feel her to be inexhuastible
like an ancient wine
and no one can gaze on her without vertigo
and time has charged her with eternity.

And to think that she wouldn't exist
except for those fragile instruments, the eyes.

Jorge Luis Borges

jousting with shadows

i find blu's work/art fascinating: often temporary, most often for a temporary online audience, a fluid use of static frames, political and satirical (yet less obvious than a lot of stencil art), and performed in the forgotten spaces of the city. perhaps it is the fact that it not for sale galleries, that while the canvas turns to rubble so does the work, that attracts me most. i posted the video for 'muto' some time ago and the new video 'combo' continues to further my fascination. each frame itself a piece of 'art', something university activists would surely buy prints of at urban outfitters before their safe local gathering of bored middle class issues and the poverty of action, but the frame is not to be found. white wash and white wash falls like justice and joy...

i mistaked you for a chanterelle...

its been a while since i've posted, yet again, but with my thesis done and a job found i should be able to post more regularly again...

i figured i would post some new stuff i've been into lately. firstly, alela diane's last album was an over produced mess which lost what had originally made her music capitivating. her new 10' ep with alina hardin seems to be moving back to the rustic acoustic mountain sound that got her attention in the first place. Califone are one of my all time favourite bands and for the life of me i cant figure out why they dont get more attention (although if they did i would probably bemoan it). Anyway, there new album, 'all my friends are funeral singers' is absolutely amazing... the two wooden sky tracks are from their tour ep - thanks to tyson for the help - and the songs continue with the quality of their recent album. not sure about super group monsters of folk yet, but i dont mind these two tracks. the clientele's new album is their best since strange geometry, nothing new, but they pull it off well. kings of convenience seem to be getting close to a new album, although riot on an empty street is a b-side from their last album of the same name. i hope they return to their darker and glacial side for the coming record. kurt mother fucking vile, i love this album and his previous work so much, just great rock music. and finally, while i can't get behind the new fuck buttons album, i like this b-side to their single as it has a very animal collective rhythm and such... not sure why i just wrote all of that, moral of the story listen to califone and kurt vile...

  2. Alela Diane feat. Alina Hardin - Rake
