Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib desert in southern Namibia, a few kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz. It developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for workers from the harsh environment of the Namib Desert. Driven by the enormous wealth of the first diamond miners the village was built like a German town, with facilities like a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theater and sport-hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray-station[3] in the southern hemisphere as well as the first tram in Africa. It had a railway link to Lüderitz. The town declined after World War I as diamond prices crashed, and operations moved to Oranjemund. It was abandoned in 1956.

potholes of sound and random strings i've found

a random grab bag of songs that are new or new to me, a fair bit of canadian stuff, for you listening pleasure

Jason Molina and Will Johnson have collaborated and have an album coming out. Judging by the track below its going to be on constant rotation for me. Spiral Stairs makes me want to go see the Pavement reunion and remember a great show they did with BSS at sled island. Forest City Lovers have a new 7' and continue to refine their sound. Mountain Man reminds me Alela Diane, not as haunting, but a similar style to her first amazing album The Pirates Gospel. Woods played three new tracks on Daytrotter, these are my two favs, been loving these guys for years. Golden Isles are a Canadian band that is new to me, at first they reminded me of tons of the NME style British crap but on further listens I think they come at their music without the aspirations of a magazine cover. Videotape, often compared to Women which i find a stretch, are also new to me but judging by the tracks I found they are keepers. I generally hate 'remixes', they are music for people who go to clubs to try and get their photos taken by scene photographers for facebook glory. I fucking love the Soft Pact (formerly the Muslims) and I like how much they have changed the song in their remix. Finally, I had heard a little buzz about Valleys before Pop Montreal who's show I unfortunately didnt make it too, but I really with I could have. They remind me of Citizens Here and Abroad but, from the sounds of it, less hit and miss. Ok thats my review? Synopsis?
  1. Molina & Johnson - Twenty Cycles To The Ground*
  2. Spiral Stairs - A Mighty Mighty Fall
  3. Forest City Lovers - Phodilus and Tyto
  4. Forest City Lovers - If I Were A Tree
  5. Mountain Man - Sewee Sewee
  6. Woods - Death Rattle*
  7. Woods - Suffering Season
  8. Golden Isles - Going Out Tonight
  9. Videotape - Nightlights*
  10. Videotape - He The Moon
  11. Phoenix - Fences (Soft Pact Remix)
  12. Valleys - Killer Legs*
  13. Valleys - Silent Woods

on the threshold between the 2nd and 3rd dimensions...

SCINTILLATION from Xavier Chassaing on Vimeo.

An experimental film made up of over 35,000 photographs. It combines an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques. I think it pairs well with the background music. Now turn off your lights and watch it in the dark over and over again....

Beneath, Ink and Resin works (sculptures? paintings? installations?) that make me question what dimension to 'view' these works from. Wikipedia tells me Dustin Yellin's (http://www.dustinyellin.com/) artworks are based on a unique process of painting 3d forms in resin. Common subjects in his artworks are biological imagery. While historic artis
ts like Leopold Blaschka and Ernst Haeckel have used their techniques to represent real biological forms, Dustin Yellin's artworks exist as permutations of natural life and form. His paintings use a method to represent 3d forms that is reminiscent of both lenticular images and rapid prototyping. The technique approximates a static volumetric display and is autostereoscopic as his artworks appear three dimensional without the use of special glasses or viewing equipment.
